Maputo / The Hague, 8 June 2012: UNICEF Mozambique Representative Jesper Morch and Nico Terra, Director of the IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre, have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) defining their collaboration in Mozambique.

The objective of the collaboration between UNICEF Mozambique and IRC is to document the experiences and lessons learnt from the Dutch funded “One Million Initiative” which started in 2006. This Initiative is the largest programme of a formal agreement between the Government of the Netherlands and UNICEF, which was established in 2006 to increase the use of safe water supplies and improved sanitation in eastern and southern Africa.  This Netherlands – UNICEF WASH Initiative (NUWI) is part of the Dutch government’s commitment to ensure access to safe drinking water and sanitation to fifty million people by 2015. Six other countries in Eastern and Southern Africa currently participate in the initiative: Ethiopia, Kenya, Comoros, Malawi, Rwanda and Zambia.

The IRC will produce four case studies including the lessons learnt on Sustainability, Sanitation, Drilling Contract Management, and Social Mobilization. The case studies will inform the further development of the National Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Programme (PRONASAR) in Mozambique and will complement other initiatives funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency JICA and the Millennium Challenge Corporation MCC in this area.
