TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE TOTAL SANITATION

West Africa Learning and Exchange Workshop

There is growing awareness of the gap in achieving the sanitation targets of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). One of the MDG targets is to halve the proportion of people without access to sanitation by the year 2015. Given the slow rate of increase in improved sanitation access, it is clear that conventional approaches are inadequate and new strategies are required to accelerate this sanitation access.

This Learning and Exchange Workshop will focus on the relative role of Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS), with a geographical focus on West Africa. It will take place from 12 - 14 November 2013 in Cotonou, Benin. Furthermore, the workshop will emphasize the roles of hygiene/sanitation behaviour change and the enabling environment around CLTS and other sanitation improvement approaches. Although there are fairly wide variations, for the most part, CLTS is based on the premise that sanitation is a household and community responsibility. In other words, CLTS has a substantive hold on the community and the decentralized local government level. At the same time, at national level, CLTS has been integrated in many national policies with national targets and is already being implemented at scale in many West African countries.

The participation fee is free although participants must take care of their own travel and accommodation costs.

Abstract deadline: 23 August 2013
