Abstract | This volume contains articles selected from the first seven volumes of the journal "Waterlines" dating from July 1982 to April 1989. There are 11 chapters, each proceded by an introductory note for background and continuity. The first chapter establishes the theme that improved sanitation and hygiene, as well as improved water supplies, are necessary to achieve health benefits, and examines the methods to ensure successful projects. Chapter 2 shows how difficult it is to measure health benefits and gives examples of water health-hazards and their control. The next three chapters deal with measures to make water supplies more safe; at the household and community level, and in particluar through water-quality control. Chapters 6 and 7 deal with latrines and other sanitation technologies. Training is covered in chapter 8 and the related community education and participation (CEP) aspects in chapter 9. Chapter 10 gives examples of programme planning, while chapter 11 stresses the need strategies for improvement, including evaluation and the introduction of CEP. Further reading lists have been included to replace the original references. |
