Abstract | This book discusses the health implications of poor housing and living conditions in urban areas of the Third World. The urban context is the subject of Chapter 1: the scale of the Third World's urban population, the deficiencies in the provision of basic infrastructure and services, the links between housing problems and health. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 describe the housing and health conditions faced by poorer groups in the cities of Buenos Aires (Argentina), Lagos (Nigeria) and Allahabad (India). Chapters 5 to 10 are on the infrastructure and services which are essential for good health: safe and sufficient supplies of water; low-cost sanitation; drainage; collection and management of household garbage; low-cost measures for the control of vectors within the home; and emergency life-saving services. Chapter 11 considers two kinds of urban future for the Third World: a future in which there are no changes in government and aid agency policies or the future which unfolds if lessons are drawn from current failures. The final chapter is about new partnerships between local governments, professionals and community organizations. It also discusses the role of privatization and of NGOs within this new approach, and the role of national governments. |
