Abstract | This manual has been written to provide an insight into the cultural and social aspects which influence sanitation development. It also gives an overview of the technical options available for on-site sanitation in rural and peri-urban areas. Rehabilitation of existing facilities is often considered to be more effective and acceptable. For this reason this manual has been given an emphasis on the technical aspects relating to upgrading. Although technical aspects of latrine design are included to help in facilitating improvements, existing handbooks should be consulted for the construction of more elaborate latrines. The manual is aimed at individuals and organizations involved in sanitation programmes for low-income communities in developing countries, not only sanitary engineers, but also social scientists, economists, planners and hygiene educators. |
