Abstract | The thirteen papers included in this book cover topics in pollution ranging from policy to technical solutions. A wide range of industrial wastes are discussed; including wastes from dairy industry, coffee industry, meat industry, textile industry and sugar industry. In Kenya, the coffee factories are required to install water recirculation systems, and the wastewater is disposed on land. In India, anaerobic lagoons are suggested; but, in Central America, anaerobic lagoons form breeding grounds for mosquitos, creating health hazards. Meat industry wastes are disposed of on crop lands in New Zealand, adding a nutrient source to maize fields. Other papers cover more policy and administrative topics, including the "polluter pays" policy in India. Pollution control as a part of integrated water resource management is the focus in Kenya. Ghana and Botswana are developing pollution policies to prevent environmental problems during their increasing industrialization. Papers discuss different technical solutions including anaerobic sludge digestion and high rate anaerobic treatment. |
