Abstract | The incorporation of the concept of participation in development projects has been shown to increase the effectiveness of project implementation and sustainability. Participation can be individual or by community, active or passive. Participation methodologies are being developed and documented for use in the field. The stages of these methodologies include promotion, mobilization, action, expansion and stabilization. This manual explains the concepts associated with participation, discusses various methodologies, outlines the evaluation process, and gives case studies from Africa, Asia and South America. The participatory approach is also discussed per sector; water, health, resource conservation, forestry, and general agricultural development. |
