Abstract

Small islands, as defined by this Guide, are islands with an area not greater than 2000 square kilometers, or where the width is not greater than 10 kilometers. Water quantity problems can result where the base is volcanic, or rainfall is too variable, and water quality is often poor due to seawater intrusion. Water resources development and management on small islands can be quite different than that of large land masses, as the groundwater turnover can be one year or less. This Guide explains and elaborates the special hydrological considerations for these areas, beginning with the conditions for freshwater occurrence, the differences in surface- and groundwater hydrology with large land areas, assessment and monitoring procedures, extensive references and 13 case studies. Special emphasis is placed on desalinization procedures and other topics such as wastewater reuse and vertical salinity distributions not often encountered in a hydrology manual. The appendices include a list of the characteristics of selected small islands, and the outline of a possible course on small island groundwater hydrology.
