Abstract | This guide helps the engineer, development expert and/or relatively inexperienced social scientist in data gathering and anlysis for socio-cultural studies. The kind of data needed is outlined, including bio-demographical information, water sources, usage, attitudes, health aspects, affordability and willingness to pay, and alternative technologies available. Techniques for acquisition of this data are explained, including interviewing, surveys, observation, literature and aerial survey. Sampling procedures include quota, cluster, stratified and systematic concepts. The statistical analysis of the data is explained. The appendix contains a test case analysis done for a feasibility study of a water supply and sanitation project in Ndwedwe, Kwazulu. |
