Abstract | The International Seminar on Wastewater Reclamation and Reuse in Aquaculture in Calcutta, December 1988, had as its theme the use of sewage - and septage - fed fish culture. In addition to providing a cheap nutrient source for fish, the use of urban wastewater also alleviates the loading of already overloaded or inadequate water treatment plants. Carp, tench, tilapias, and prawns have been successfully cultured by this method; some systems are supplmented by vegetable and fruit crops grown on the dikes between ponds. Water cress and duck weed are grown on some of the ponds to provide additional uptake of nutrients and serve as an energy-rich food source for herbivorous fish. Waste stabilization and maturation ponds are advised to reduce the number of pathogenic microorganisms such as Salmonella. One hazard of these systems is the workers' exposure to Schistosomiasis. Case studies are presented from India, Hungary, Thailand, Peru, Israel, China and Germany. |
