Abstract | This paper contains several ideas developed by dr. Goesta Nilsson, a Swedish horticulturist, during his twenty years in Botswana. These ideas include "growing walls", a staggered concrete block wall with plants in the interstices, rainwater harvesting system where water is collected in two underground and one above ground tank and an "in house" sewage and wastewater reuse system that is not described in the report due to patenting considerations. The productive homestead described is meant to be a sustainable, low cost micro-enterprise for arid areas. The concept is based upon private ownership, water conservation, decentralization of food production and long-term fixed interest loans. |
