Abstract | The 17th Water, Engineering and Development Centre Conference in Nairobi, Kenya in August 1991 put emphasis on infrastructure; often one of the greatest hindrances in development project implementation. The Conference was divided into 7 plenary sessions and 15 discussions groups, with representatives from 31 African, Asian and western countries participating. The plenary sessions covered a variety of topics from communities, women and NGO's, water quality, treatment and pollution, groundwater and surface water studies, and planning and finance. The discussion group topics ranged from technical approaches such as irrigation and agricultural use of water, solid waste management and water treatment, to social/economic themes such as women in development and community participation, to institutional strengthening. Many of the 54 papers presented in the proceedings present case studies from Africa, Nepal and India. |
