Abstract

Participation is widely recognized as a key concept in development work. This manual outlines basic participatory strategies, and offers suggestions for incorporating them into training programmes. Three behavioural concerns which underlie programme planning are the need to promote coping behaviour, transforming behaviour and transcending behaviour. These three types of behaviour respond to three distinct teaching methods: didactic, consciousness-raising, and the growth centred approach. These behaviours and teaching methods are discussed in detail, including examples and case studies presented. Attitudes from different areas of the world are discussed. Guidelines for participatory workshops are given, based on an enabling environment with multiple facilitators. The workshop is meant to build confidence and support, encouraging participants to make their own decisions, use their creativity, and to establish egaliatrian relationships with the facilitator.
