Abstract | This baseline study is based exclusively on a literature and documentation review, and on informal discussions with the professionals in the environmental sector in India. It has been written particularly for the development cooperation between India and Finland in the sector. The wide scope of the subject matter means that the document touches now and then specifically on environmental problems relating to water. It is mentioned that groundwater resources in India are becoming increasingly polluted, and that most available surface water is also polluted. Domestic waste represents almost 80 per cent of the pollution load. Out of India's 3,245 towns and cities only 21 have partial or full sewerage and sewage treatment facilities. Recommendations given focus on how the Finnish International Development Agency (FINNIDA) might develop strategies together with the relevant Indian authorities to deal with problems in the environmental sector in India. One recommendation included the preparation of a feasibility study on the management options for urban water supply and sanitation. |
