Abstract

A reliable supply of high quality water in rural communities is not only dependent on good technical design and construction of the system, but also on operation and maintenance, as well as financial management. Because of limited funding for building new systems, rehabilitation of water systems plays an increasingly important role in providing services to rural communities. Besides repairing or replacing water system components it involves: a. an assessment of the systems's support infrastructure, b. determining its past weaknesses, and c. developing an improved infrastructure which will be able to provide the necessary support. This report (which is also a manual) presents a detailed method for designing and implementing more sustainable rural water system rehabilitation projects. It focuses on identifying the reasons for system failures and proposes a number of solutions. The report is aimed at project designers and implementors of rural water supply rehabilitation projects for small to medium-sized communities of 200 to 10,000 people.
