Abstract | The workshop, sponsored by the Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA), examined some of the issues involved and potential strategies available for a more integrated and sustainable approach to water resources management in Botswana. Three main themes were addressed: (i) sustainable water resources management; (ii) water resources development and the environment; (iii) appropriate water technologies. The 18 papers covering these themes included the following topics: water demand projections; drought management in Namibia; environmental impact assessment; the impact of settlement patterns; source protection; wastewater reuse; community participation; and solar desalination. There were also three keynote papers of which two gave an overview of water resources development in Botswana, and the third (by M. Falkenmark) discussed the relationship between water scarcity and land degradation. Workshop recommendations included: the need to establish a Water Resources Council in Botswana; the need to treat water from a 'resource oriented' as opposed to a 'demand oriented' perspective, realising that water is a scarce, valuable resource which should not be wasted or necessarily supplied free of charge; the need to give greater consideration to conjunctive use of surface and groundwater; and the need to develop a National Water Conservation Strategy. |
