Abstract | This report summarizes the results of a survey of American NGOs (called Private Voluntary Organizations (PVOs)) to determine their involvement in environmental health activities. In particular, the survey looks at nine sub-sectors: water supply and sanitation, wastewater, solid waste, tropical disease, hazardous materials, air pollution, injury prevention, occupational safety, and food hygiene. It also includes some cross cutting areas such as risk assessment and urban environmental management. The aim of the survey was to: i. identify NGOs that might be interested/eligible in carrying out AID funded environmental health activities in this field; ii. to identify areas where the Environmental Health Project (EHP) may provide assistance to the NGOs; and iii. to suggest ways AID may get NGOs more involved in environmental health activities. In total 57 NGOs were contacted and 24 are profiled in the report. The survey is intended to be a first step in a long-term process of identifying NGOs involved in environmental health and working to promote the concept of environmental health in the NGO community. |
