| Abstract | Since 1993 SANDEC is conducting a field research project on the "Management of Sludges from On-site Sanitation" (SOS). This article starts with an overview of the SOS project objectives and approach, followed by an account of the specific challenges of faecal sludge (FS) treatment in urban areas, including disposal practices, impacts and FS characteristics. Problems related to FS sampling and analysis are discussed and a minimum set of variables is proposed for treatment plant design and control. Several sludge treatment options are reviewed of which SANDEC has chosen the following for field research: settling/thickening units; co-composting of faecal sludge and municipal solid waste; sludge dewatering/drying beds; stabilization ponds; and extended aeration. Results from field research in Accra, Ghana, are presented in detail, while ongoing and planned research in Wuhan (China) and Jakarta (Indonesia) is briefly mentioned. A list of research institutes involved in FS treatment is included. |
