Abstract | The Aqua-Sudan-40 portable rapid sand filter, designed by the author, was installed in the village of Gammalab on the banks of the White Nile in Sudan. The plant produces 40m3 of water per hour, sufficient for 22,000 people. It\AB comprises of a flocculator, high rate tube settler, aerator and rapid sand filter. The locally produced plant costs US$ 20,000 compared to US$ 40,000 for an imported 10/15 m3 plant. A team of seven skilled and semi-skilled\AB workers constructed the portable plant in 40 days. |
