Abstract | This paper is a review of the water supply and sanitation situation in the low-income/shanty areas of the city of Nairobi, Kenya. It looks at the socio-enconomic characteristics of the estates identified as low-income\AB communities, paying particular attention to housing policy, which was considered to be an important ingredient when an evaluation of sanitation services is considered. Solid waste management in the city is briefly considered in\AB general with special attention being paid to low-income areas. The review suggests that despite the substantial investments put into water supply services, not enough attention has been paid to sanitation provision. Policy\AB constraints relating to the quality of housing vis-a-vis services provided are seen by the authors as having contributed to the present state of affairs. |
