Abstract | Thousands of people die or suffer from water and sanitation-related diseases during post-disaster periods. In Bangladesh, the management and maintenance of the potency of water purifying tablets (WPT) is not satisfactory. After the 1991 cyclone about 63 per cent of the WPTs were found to have lost potency. Other methods of water treatment, except boiling of water, were rarely promoted. Boiling water is often impractical in disaster situations. A regional workshop on water and sanitation applied research in disasters identified five priority issues: appropriate environmental preparedness plans; appropriate waste disposal technologies; appropriate water treatment methods; self-help activities during the vulnerable periods; and health education related to water and sanitation in disaster situations. |
