Abstract | This paper describes the application of material flux analysis (MFA) to calculate the water balance for the town of Tunja in Colombia. The phosphorous (P) concentration in sewage is used as an indicator for food and detergents consumed. Carbon (C) in the form of chemical oxygen demand (COD) is the indicator used for organic pollution. The MFA is then applied to analyze two scenarios in water resources management: the first is the installation of a sewer system and the second involves the use of septic tanks. |
