Abstract | This publication describes results of nine years work to improve hygiene in a developing country context, based on field work in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso and elsewhere. Chapter 1 examines the subject of hygiene in general. Chapter 2 evaluates the specific hygiene practices most likely to put health at risk. Chapter 3 aims to review the evidence on the transmission of diseases and describe those practices that may be of particular concern. The problem of the measurement of hygiene behaviour is addressed in chapters 4-6. Chapter 7 addresses the perceptions of diarrhoea and hygiene in Bobo-Dioulasso. The final chapters try to fit in the lessons learned into a framework that can be used to design hygiene promotion programmes in the future. |
