Abstract | This background paper for the World Bank's "World Development Report 2000/2001: Attacking Poverty", reviews the link and impact of physical infrastructure - roads, electricity, water supply and sanitation - on poverty. The paper first reviews the socio-economic impact of infrastructure on poverty, which is the facet that has been most emphasized in the past. It then explores the impact of infrastructure on reduction in exclusion, the link with social capital, reduction in vulnerability, and the implication for private sector provision of services. |
