Abstract | This report assesses the impact of id21, a web-based information service that aims to bring UK-based development research findings and policy recommendations to policymakers and development practitioners worldwide. It draws on four primary sources: over 90 face to face, semi-structured interviews with users in South Africa, India and Uganda; a survey of id21 email news users (1414 usable responses); a survey of subscribers to id21's quarterly print review Insights (348 usable responses); and a survey of researchers, mainly UK based, who have had research posted by id21 (83 useable responses). The report first reviews some theoretical models and considers the policy context, and examines the impact of research in general. It then looks at how effective id21's chosen methodologies are in helping research to create impact on policy. Recommendations are provided on research selection criteria; marketing; targeting & topicality; product positioning; and building capacity. |
