Abstract | The RUSAFIYA Project (an acronym in Hausa for water, sanitation and health) was conceived during 1987. It aimed at using the participatory approach to develop a replicable model and a sustainable organisational/institutional arrangement for planning and implementing integrated projects for water supply, sanitation and hygiene education. The process to be used involved starting with the best available approach and institutional arrangement and using the method of learning by doing to test and continually modify the methods in the light of experience to end up with an approach which is socio-culturally appropriate, technically feasible and financially affordable. This in order to expand and improve the delivery of water supply and sanitation services to rural communities in Nigeria. |
