Abstract | Examples of water privatisation fiascos can be seen in Buenos Aires (Argentina), Manila (Philippines), Atlanta (USA), Cochabamba (Bolivia), Indonesia, South Africa and the United Kingdom. What became clear over the past decade was that the major multinational water corporations were not planning on making a significant contribution to the capital needed to ensure access to clean and affordable water. Instead, they contributed to an increase in consumer water rates of up to 200% in some cases, public health crises, lack of investment in water infrastructure. Hence, threatening jobs and trade unions. Thus, they caused environmental catastrophes, secret deals and social turmoil. |
