Volume 1 of the third edition of the Guidelines for the safe use of wastewater, excreta and greywater focuses on policy, regulation and institutional arrangements. It provides guidance on policy formulation, harmonization and mainstreaming, on regulatory mechanisms and on establishing institutional links between the various interested sectors and parties. It also presents an overview of the nature and scope of options for protecting public health. This information should be useful in the development of national policies for the safe use of wastewater, excreta and greywater. Detailed technical information on health risk assessment, health protection measures and monitoring and evaluation is presented in Volumes 2, 3 and 4. A synthesis of the key issues from these volumes can be found in the executive summaries in the second part of this volume. It also contains the index and a glossary of terms for all four volumes of the Guidelines.
