Abstract | This manual serves as the water footprint guidelines promoted by the WFN. It covers a comprehensive set of methods for water footprint accounting. It shows how water footprints cane be calculated for individual processes and products, as well as for consumers, nations and businesses. Besides, the report includes methods for water footprint sustainability assessment and a library of water footprint response options. The four phases of water footprint assessment are addressed in the following chapters: Chapter 2: setting goals and scope; Chapter 3: water footprint accounting; Chapter 4: water footprint sustainability assessment; and Chapter 5: water footprint response formulation. Chapter 6 identifies and discusses the major challenges to be addressed in the future. Chapter 7 is the concluding chapter. Depending on the interest of the reader, one can focus on different parts of the manual. Particularly in Chapter 3 on water footprint accounting, the reader can be selective. The following sections are most relevant depending on the interest: consumers: 3.1 – 3.2 – 3.3 – 3.4; river basin authorities: 3.1 – 3.2 – 3.3 – 3.5; national governments: 3.1 – 3.2 – 3.3 – 3.6; and businesses: 3.1 – 3.2 – 3.3 – 3.7. The current manual is a first version. It will be a living document, requiring frequent updates and improvement. |
