Abstract | The USAID-funded Hygiene Improvement Project has compiled a training package to facilitate work in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) around the world. This training guide, along with its accompanying Outreach Worker’s Handbook and Collection of Resource Materials, is intended for use by any organization that works with or is about to start working with outreach workers—local individuals who work at the community level. Your organization has decided—or is in the process of deciding—to provide your outreach workers with training so they will be prepared to work in communities to help people adopt healthier behaviors related to water, sanitation, and hygiene. These new or improved practices will result in significantly fewer cases of diarrhea (and therefore less illness and fewer deaths), especially among children. In addition, these new practices may well have psychological benefits such as increased feelings of pride/prestige, of being good parents, and of contributing to the community’s welfare.
