In a joint effort with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Addis Ababa, IRC Ethiopia promoted the national Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) programme at the 12th National Multi-Stakeholder Forum (MSF) held from July 11 to 12, 2024.

The objective of the effort was to raise awareness about the IWRM programme in Ethiopia and support the national initiative on IWRM. The promotion targeted a diverse audience including the public, government officials, NGOs, environmental organisations, private businesses, water sector professionals, and stakeholders involved in water resource management in Ethiopia.

The promotional campaign included a compelling video highlighting the objective and impact of the national IWRM programme. Since the interviewees in the video talk about the IWRM programme and the necessity of coordination to tackle challenges related to water resource management. The campaign served as a valuable opportunity to increase public awareness of the national IWRM programme, foster coordination among stakeholders, and showcase the Government of the Netherlands’ commitment and support for water resource management in Ethiopia.

IRC worked closely with a video production company, the Embassy, and interviewees throughout preproduction, production and post-production stages. The video featured interviews with representatives from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the World Bank, the Water and Land Resource Centre, and the Ministry of Water and Energy.

The MSF started with the premiere of the IWRM promotional video, which was prominently featured throughout the event. The video is about eight minutes long and was well received by attendees.

Quotes from the video:

Every sector, every institution requires water and energy as an element of growth. The energy even is part of the water resource in our country context. So everything in the water system has to be healthy so that other sectors can be the same - Debebe Deferso, Lead Executive Officer of Hydrology and Basin Information Systems, Ministry of Water and Energy.

Water management is not so much about managing water as it is about managing people. So it is a task that we have to work together for. This programme that the government has now started to implement is a great tool for coordination and integrating some of those concepts that came from our experience - Jelmer Van Veen, Water Portfolio Policy Manager, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ethiopia.

Water resource management involves many sectors, industry, agriculture, and domestic water supply. So, it needs a national platform to put us together, to work together - Si Gou, Senior Water Resource Management Specialist, the World Bank.
