Dr. Amita Bhakta has a BA (Hons) Human Geography and an MRes Geography at the University of Leicester, UK. She became the first Indian woman with Cerebral Palsy to complete her PhD (2013-2019) at the Water Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC) in the School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering at Loughborough University, UK. Her thesis was on the WASH needs of women making the transition to menopause (perimenopause) in urban Ghana. Besides this topic, Dr Bhakta also has expertise on the incontinence needs of people in low and middle-income countries, accessible WASH facilities and modern energy cooking services for people with disabilities, intersectionality and PhotoVoice (participatory photography).
