Abstract | Prescribed chlorination levels (0.2 mg/l) were found not to be maintained at small state water schemes as required in Namibia. The main reason was found to be consumer resistance to chlorinated water. Other causes were the failure to maintain the supply of chlorination chemicals, and the failure to install chlorination equipment. The authors conclude that: 1. consumers must be educated about the advantages of disinfected water; 2. if consumer resistance persists, alternative non-chlorine disinfection methods such as UV radiation can be used; 3. to avoid the problems of continuous operation on-site disinfectant generators can be used; and 4. more field research on disinfection options is needed. |
