Abstract

Anaerobic digestion is a versatile process for waste management and energy production, capable of utilizing a wide range of organic materials, including livestock manures, sewage sludges, municipal garbage, food processing wastes and energy crops. The technical components incorporated in design of anaerobic digesters are identified and discussed. A range of options for design of two principal components, the digestion vessel and gas holder, are discussed in detail, using functioning pilot-scale and full-scale digesters as examples. Design aimed at reducing the capital cost and technical complexity of digesters are discussed and examples are given of lower-cost designs developed in different countries. It is concluded that a coordinated programme is justified to develop a range of low-cost design options, each optimal for a particular application
