| Abstract | The Kenya-Finland Western Water Supply Programme covers four districts located mostly in the Western Province of Kenya, which borders on Uganda. The study area has a tropical climate, one of the highest population growth rates in the world, and is almost totally rural. Surface water supplies are abundant, with varying quality. Shallow groundwater is also plentiful, with generally acceptable quality except in latrine areas. A computerized database was developed for the Water Master Plan in 1989-92, and has been used for the update. This database can be extended to monitoring operations. Existing water and sanitation systems are discussed as well as water user conflicts. This programme is based on a community cost-sharing principle, and operation and maintenance systems are expected to be financed on a village or community level. Women make the choice of which water source to use, but the continued use of contaminated sources in some areas reveal that they have a low health awareness. |
