Abstract

The document discusses the City-Wide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) initiative in Ethiopia, supported by UNICEF, IRC WASH, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, aimed at improving sanitation coordination in four Ethiopian towns. It highlights challenges like overlapping stakeholder roles and lack of communication, and solutions such as creating coordination mechanisms and regular stakeholder meetings for collective action. Various tools were used for diagnostic assessments, including stakeholder analysis, service level assessments, and shit flow diagrams, adapted to the Ethiopian context to inform the master planning process. The document outlines the strategic directions and costed plans for achieving sustainable sanitation and solid waste management, emphasizing the importance of community engagement, financial planning, and capacity building. The document serves as a reference guide, detailing the process and tools used in developing these master plans. It also includes recommendations for effective implementation and monitoring of the CWIS master plans. (author abstract)
