Abstract

The question of the role of the state in community participation is examined in detail in this book. It asks whether state involvement is beneficial or harmful to community participation. In addition to the central theme, the history of community participation ideas is traced, and an exposition of the theory and practice of the subject is provided. The application of community participation in the health, education, rural development, urban development and social work sectors is treated in 5 respective chapters. Selected case studies are employed to illustrate the progress made in each of these sectors. The concluding chapter reviews government attitutes towards and support of community participation. It also asks whether there are effective alternatives to state involvement in community participation and whether state and community relations can be harmonized in the promotion of social development.
