Abstract

This feasibility study of the Beng Salang Drainage Basin in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, was carried out as part of the implementation of a pilot programme for the improvement of living conditions and reductions of health risks. This study is for the Psar Depot 2, a densely populated area which, at present, has no adequate sanitation or drainage facilities. Waste water in open ditches and roads creates a major health risk, particularly during the rainy season; this risk is aggravated by blockage of the few existing street drains. Water supply is restricted to 10 hours per day due to the poor condition of the water supply system. Construction of a drainage system, including waste water interceptors and a new main sewer are proposed; in addition, dredging of the Beng Tempen polder is advised. The report includes all technical drawings, cost and manpower estimates, and an outline for a comprehensive Master Plan Study for the entire city.
