Abstract

The paper describes Pakistan's environmental problems and how these can be traced to the policies and changes in resource management regimes instituted under colonial rule - although the scale of these problems has been magnified by post-colonial development models. Consideration is given to social and economic changes in recent decades in agriculture, forestry and fisheries, industry and human settlements and the environmental problems that these have caused. It is suggested that Pakistan's environmental problems are largely due to the physical, social and economic repercussions of colonial and post-colonial development models promoted by the North. The persistence of these development models, the authors state, means that it is impossible to view environment related problems in isolation.
