Abstract

The report evaluates the status of water supply to developing urban communities in South Africa. The success of providing access to adequate water in urban areas was seen as being dependent upon the following factors: a. The restructuring of local authorities on sound economic and administrative principles. b. The availability of housing subsidies that can be used to provide unserved people with water supply reticulation. c. The promotion of financially strong water supply agencies which will be able to raise capital for bulk and connector infrastructure. d. Acceptance by consumers that they must pay for water. e. The availability of properly trained personnel to design, construct, operate and maintain water supply systems.
