Abstract | Since the beginning of the International Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Decade, the World Bank and other donor agencies have promoted the use of the ventilated improved pit (VIP) latrine in almost all their rural sanitation programmes in Africa. This strategy has been unsuccessful since the VIP latrine technology is too expensive for most rural households. The "no cost" one-day shallow pit latrine in combination with health education is considered a more viable solution. |
