Abstract

People in developing countries are generally not aware of the impacts their activities on the land have on groundwater quality. The document contains an elaboration on sources of contamination, how contaminants enter the groundwater environment from land surfaces and how contaminants are transported along with the groundwater flow. This study addresses the status of the mathematical treatment of transport modelling and groundwater quality management modelling. This study identifies certain empirical assessment methodologies for evaluating the potential of groundwater contamination based on easily available information on hydrological conditions and proximity of contaminating sources with respect to the groundwater environment. The publication also includes some general guidelines on planning a groundwater development and management programme.
