Abstract | Kumasi is the second largest city in Ghana, with a population of 600,000; most of which lives in rented appartments. The level of education is relatively high, and most dwellings have electricity and access to the municipal water supply system. However, nearly 40 per cent of the population uses public latrines, due to lack of facilities in their building or compound. A survey of 1200 randomly selected households was carried out in 1989, and the results were analyzed together with the results from several other studies, including observation of public latrines and desludging truck operation, and surveys of managers and workers in public latrines. Respondents to the surveys were asked to give their preference for a WC or a KVIP (Kumasi VIP), and the reasons for their choice. If the respondent was not familiar with the material, the enumerator explained. At present, 75% of the money paid for sanitation is used for non-sanitation activities. The cost of conventional sewerage is not at this time affordable for the population. Sample survey questionnaires, cost estimate analyses and technical drawings are included in the appendices. |
