Abstract | Diarrhoeal disease is one of the major health problems in West-Java, although reports vary in their figures for diarrhoea-related child mortality (11 to 25 per cent). After an introduction to West-Java and the factors contributing to diarrhoeal diseases, the Control of Diarrhoeal Diseases (CDD) programme and related programmes in West-Java are discussed. These include programmes for promotion of breastfeeding, improved weaning practices, immunisation, handwashing, safe water, and latrine use. The author of the thesis reviews the international literature on indicators for monitoring of three diarhoeal disease intervention programmes: case management; hand washing; and water supply and sanitation, since there are no specific data available for West-Java. The conclusion is that all three intervention programmes studied, have a possible impact on health, based on the fact that similar programmes outside West-Java have shown health improvements. Yet measuring the impact of such programmes is complicated and therefore the quality of programme output should receive priority attention. |
