Abstract

The Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE), which is the nodal agency for water and sanitation in Bangladesh, has accelerated sanitation coverage, through social mobilization, to increase sanitation awareness across the country. This was done in an effort to reduce the high incidence of diarrhoea due to a highly faecal-polluted environment that is aggravated by high population density in a country with a hot and humid climate. The paper outlines DPHE's objective to achieve high sanitary latrine useage. It summarizes the strategies that were adopted to reach this goal.
