Abstract

This book served as a supportive document for a workshop on solid waste management that was held in Bangalore, India, in April 1994. The workshop was part of an Indo-Dutch research project on linkages between "formal" and "informal" handling of urban solid waste in Indian cities. In this book the authors analyze municipal services as well as the plight, role, social and demographic characteristics, working conditions and relations of thousands of men, women and children who make a living from waste in the Indian city of Bangalore. They describe the role of each category of people involved in "integrated" solid waste management and examine the extensive trade in and manufacturing of recycled glass, paper and plastic in the city. One of the main purposes of the book is to advocate collaboration of all concerned in the management of solid waste, with the help of community-based organizations, NGOs and the private sector. This book is addressed to professionals, administrators, politicians, NGOs and others. It is intended as aid in the design of more suitable and more honourable ways of dealing with waste. It contains statistics, tables, figures and a bibliography.
