Abstract | Difficulties in servicing remote waterpoints and the transferral of responsibility to the user has initiated a program in Zimbabwe to upgrade traditionally designed wells. Family wells are often preferred in rural areas due to\AB their proximity to the home, simple low-cost technology, well-defined ownership and traditional use. At present, many of these wells are insufficiently protected against contamination, and are dangerous for small children\AB because of their poor linings. The upgraded well consists of a brick lined well with a strong concrete apron and runoff provisions. It has a bucket and windlass hauling system, and is covered by a well cover slab with a raised\AB collar and tin lid. The Zimbabwean govenment plans to provide individual subsidies to families who wish to upgrade their wells, and assume that the pride of ownership will ensure that the owner will maintain the unit. Hygiene\AB education is planned to accompany the upgraded well program. |
